|#15 Sitton Elementary

The Tooth Taxi was parked at Sitton Elementary in the St. John's neighborhood in Portland. Sitton is one of the VIDA schools where students receive free vision, dental and audiometric services. Parked on the playground blacktop right on the home stretch of the makeshift track; providing an excellent view of PE races and other recess activities. Students were always curious when they walked by the Tooth Taxi.
A number of kids were skeptical of the dentist and many kids were worried when they heard their name called for the Tooth Taxi. But, Dr. Moffitt focused on providing a positive learning experience for the students. Even the kids who walked onto the Tooth Taxi with fear went back to class with the realization that the dentist is not so bad.
Dr. Moffitt offered to take out a very loose baby tooth on a boy that was already numb from treatment. The boy said that he wanted it to come out by itself. But as the patient was leaving the Tooth Taxi, Dr. Moffitt suggested that the student himself could wiggle it out while it was numb. Not too long later, the boy was in the school hallway showing off the tooth that had fallen out.

Mary Nichols of Healthy Kids Healthy Portland (fluoridating Portland's water). Mary interviewed & filmed staff for the HKHP website: www.healthykidshealthyportland.org. She shared this about her experience on the Tooth Taxi: "I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed meeting the Tooth Taxi crew last week! It was time spent that will actually stay with me a lifetime. I did not know about this incredible service until working on the fluoride campaign. I was impressed and inspired by the level of compassion each team member had. Thank you for letting me take time from your busy day. Let's hope we can get water fluoridation passed! 20 more days to go.
From the kid gallery:
One boy was excited that he was able to whistle again after the anesthetic wore off. He was showing off his whistling talent in the school hallways.
52% of students screened needed treatment
48% needed no treatment.
