#21 De Paul Alternative High School
June 10, 2013 by Mary Daly

The summer season kicked off with two weeks of treatment at De Paul Alternative High School in NE Portland.  Chris Blair, Principal, is great as he keeps kids with dental needs headed our way; not an easy job when kids are continuously joining or leaving the program.   We welcomed our intern, pre-dent student Claire Skach.

Volunteers:
Amanda Black RDH
Dr. Terrylynn Tennant,
Anita Seeley, assistant

Visitors:
Erin Daly (Mary's niece)
Genevieve Maun (Dr.Tennant's Niece)
Scout & Mojo, the English Springer Spaniels
Charlie La Tourette, DFO

Sonja Stark, who you'll remember from previous recaps when she visited the Tooth Taxi; Sonja chose the Tooth Taxi for her 8th grade independent learning project and collected oral hygiene donations from friends, family, students and church groups.  Sonja and her Mom, Kristan, delivered a big box of supplies to the Tooth Taxi team.  Thank you Sonja!

From the kid gallery:
We heard lots of thank you's from the majority of the teens.   "Thank You for what you're doing."

Realities from the road:
We meet a lot of students that are grateful to have the opportunity to turn their life around with the De Paul program; these kids are most appreciative of the dental treatment as well.  For most of them dental care has been neglected.  Managing the schedule requires a lot of flexibility from the school and the Tooth Taxi team – the schedule can easily fall apart: 2 students dismissed due to a fight, one girl ran away, 9 new students arrived and we had 9 new screenings.  We were asked to not give anything to the students as things get used by some inappropriately. We gave administrators their oral hygiene kits to be handed out later.

We heard from many students that they can't brush their teeth after breakfast.  Dr. Moffitt wrote a very informative and compelling letter encouraging officials to look at their policies around student access to oral hygiene.

Other notes:
91% of students screened needed treatment
9% needed no treatment.
