Thanks to several DFO Board members, the Tooth Taxi was kept rolling in September with a repeat visit to Nestucca Valley Elementary in Cloverdale, South Tillamook County. Many of you will remember Dr. Moffitt's comment from this school in April:
My brain is going to explode with the difficulty of deciding which kids will get treatment when there are so many with rampant decay, toothaches going for over a year, infected teeth, and adult front teeth with savage decay when there isn't enough time to see everyone. There are too many kids with cavities. There is not enough time to treat the giant cavities, let alone time to figure out why there are so many with decay at this school. It is terribly sad.
DFO board member volunteers:
Dr. Bill Ten Pas
Dr. Mike Goger
Dr. Janet Peterson
ODS/Moda Health loaned us Becca Jordan to assist.
Our second week at the school Dr. Peterson joined us again and we were staffed by temp employees, Dr. Kevin Prates and John Bachman, while DAISY loaned us Jerri Boline to assist.
Dr. Ten Pas kept patients smiling all day with his jokes. A student who had a tooth extracted told him she didn't want her tooth as the Tooth Fairy doesn't visit her house. Really? Well, the Tooth Fairy does visit the Tooth Taxi! And she left behind some money for our student!
C.J. McLeod, DFO Board President was our "johnny-on-the-spot" escorting students, hosting the staff for dinner and running a shuttle when our pace car ended up in the auto shop.
Dr. Peterson's speed kept everyone on their toes including the High School Principal who transported students to the Tooth Taxi for treatment.
Dr. Goger, with no shortage of jokes, finished several treatment plans and took special care treating a young patient who had a choir performance later in the day.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Cloverdale visits.
From the kid gallery:
During oral hygiene presentations: Catherine is talking to the class about brushing twice a day, a little girl raises her hand: "I've never brushed my teeth before."
Only 3 new screenings since the focus was to continue treatment on students identified at a previous visit.
