Eastern Oregon - Milton-Freewater March 7 – 11, 2016 & Elgin March 14 – 18, 2016
by Carrie Peterson
The two women team of Dr. Karli and Becca recently headed East in the Tooth Taxi to Milton-Freewater. With the percentage of need being down 26% since our last visit here two years ago, they were able to complete all of the treatment on 24 out of 25 of the students screened.
Witch Barbie came out on the van with one of our young patients who had appointments three days in a row. Barbie worked her magic and cast a spell on the girl, causing her to hold very still while she was getting treatment done. If only she could travel with us every week! Becca appealed to the fun nature of the kids and had a silly face contest with them.
The following week, as we made our way back east, we were greeted by snow! The roads remained clear though and the team was able to arrive safely in Elgin at Stella Mayfield Elementary on time. We once again saw a decrease in the amount of need since our last visit. 13 out of the 27 patients screened were kids that we had seen during our last visit in 2014. Many of them had much improved homecare and most that had cavities before were cavity free this time. It did give us the chance to provide them with a cleaning, review brushing and flossing technique and place sealants on newly erupted teeth. To be able to check in with some of our previous patients and see them doing so well was very rewarding.
The Tooth Taxi team and patients also enjoyed having return volunteer Dr. Pat Nearing join us for a day.
