#39 Haines
October 8, 2012 By Mary Daly
We were charmed by the architecture of the Haines Elementary School built in 1919. Part of the Baker City school district Haines is 10 miles north of Baker City, a rural community: agriculture, ranches and a busy potato processing plant. Haines Main Street has an old town Western façade that looks like it is straight from the movies.

Dr. Warren Whitnah and his daughter, Tymmera, came from Halfway, OR.

DFO Board member, Dr. Pat Nearing, joined us from La Grande, OR.

Pauline Stuedli RDH, faculty at La Grande ODS College of Dental Sciences brought four hygiene students to work on the portable units: Katie McAlister, Jacob Treanor, Tessie Wilson, and Jordan Mikel. Students also delivered oral hygiene presentations to classrooms.

From the kid gallery:
Two young patients waiting to go back to class; one says to the other, "How'd yours go? Is your teeth numb?"

Dr. Moffitt to 2nd grader: "Have you been to the dentist before?"
Student: "Probably 9 years ago."
Dr. Moffitt: "How old are you?"
Student: "7"

After receiving fluoride varnish: "It tastes like cantaloupe."

Every job has its fringe benefits. This week after our clinic wrapped up we were treated to a flight over the Baker Valley by pilot and dentist Dr. Pat Nearing. What a view! Thank you!

Other notes:
68% of students screened needed treatment
32% needed no treatment.

We Believe Every Child Deserves Quality Dental Care

We advocate for increased funding for children's dental treatment and education. We support community water fluoridation, a proven and safe way to reduce cavities, and we encourage volunteerism in the dental community.
